某个小村子里有一个老太太，她的儿媳妇对她不好，经常打骂她，他的儿子也不敢管。
后来有一天，老太太竟然上吊自杀了。可是老太太死后她的丧事也办的很寒酸，毕竟家里也不太富裕，而且儿媳妇舍不得花费。就打算把遗体放上一晚上，明天就下葬。
当晚为老人换上寿衣后，就把尸体放在了院子里，他的儿子为他守灵。
晚上不知道从哪里跑来的一只黑猫，从老人的遗体上跳了过去，落地后就不动了。有一种说法，如果猫从尸体上过去，死尸借了猫的气儿，就会诈尸。
听说老人的儿子亲眼看见，就在那只猫跳过去后，老人突然坐了起来，半边人脸，半边猫脸，老人的儿子当场就吓傻了……
第二天邻居们来帮忙下葬的时候发现老人的儿子和儿媳都死了，而且死状极为凄惨，肚子被抓开了，肠子都不见了。
老人不见了，后来这个村子就感觉很阴暗，总有动物莫名其妙地消失。后来还有几个小孩没了，弄得人心惶惶，大人都告诉自家小孩，没事不要乱跑，要是真碰见那东西了，就绕着弯跑，因为据说僵尸是不会拐弯儿的。
传说越来越广，以至于很多地方的小孩子都听说了猫脸老太太。
