天热得让人心慌，老村长坐在院子里纳凉，脸色凝重。
最近山里不太平，听说跑来只疯狗，万一咬了人，把狗瘟带到村里，那可就糟了。
“村长没睡啊？我有一件事想跟您老说说。”院门吱呀一声被推开了，是草花爹。
老村长把草花爹让进屋里。
草花爹犹豫了一会几，吞吞吐吐地说：“今天我进山打算打只狍子给草花和她娘打打牙祭，结果看见一只疯狗追着一个人死命地咬着……隐约瞅着，像狗子。”

老村长铁青着脸沉默了。
正午的太阳烤得大地一片焦灼，老村长推开村东头一户人家的大门：“狗子爹，狗子在家吗？”
狗子爹忙迎上来说：“这兔崽子又惹事了？看我不打死他。”
老村长忙说：“不是，不是。昨天我看见土地庙屋顶漏了，打算修一修，找狗子帮帮忙。”
狗子爹长出了一口气，说：“这没说的。狗子快出来，跟你大爷干活去。”
狗子从里屋出来，眼神有些警惕，大热的天，他居然穿着长衫。
人多，活很快就干完了。
老村长微笑着说：“大家辛苦了，赶紧去河里洗个澡吧。”
村外有条河，是村里人的“浴池”，白天男人用，晚上女人用。
大家脱光衣服纷纷跳进河里，只有狗子阴晴不定地看着在水里嬉戏的村民，一只手死死地捂着衣服扣子。
老村长皱了皱眉：“狗子，你怎么不下去洗洗？看你这一头的汗。”

草花爹突然站出来说：“是我！”
狗子爹冲上去揪住草花爹的衣领，说：“我哪里得罪你了，你这样糟践俺家狗子？”
草花爹从怀里掏出那枚铜钱，说：“你看清楚了，这是你家狗子的吧？”
狗子爹傻了，那枚铜钱是狗子出生那年他在地里刨出来的，人人都说是值钱物件，他拿着在全村人面前炫耀了—遍，最后戴在了狗子的脖子上。
狗子一看见那枚铜钱，立刻疯了似的冲草花爹大喊：“叔，我错了……我知道错了。您放我一回吧！叔……”
草花爹赶忙说：“快把他的嘴堵上，要是咬着谁就坏了。”
大家七手八脚地把狗子塞进了“猪笼”。
狗子爹一下跪在村长面前：“村长，俺家就一根独茁啊！狗子要是没了，俺家的香火可就断了！”
老村长有那么一刻的动摇，但还是狠下心喊道：“下水！”
狗子被处决后，狗子爹—病不起，嘴里一直喃喃地念叨着：“完了，香火断了，断了……”没过多久便一命呜呼了。
